An arrest warrant has been issued for Rep. Tom DeLay, currently under indictment by two grand juries for money laundering and conspiracy. Both the court and DeLay's lawyers portray this as merely a formality.

The warrant states: "To any sheriff or peace officer of the state of Texas, greetings, you are hereby commanded to arrest Thomas Dale DeLay and keep him safely so that you have him before the 331st Judicial District Court of Travis County."

Bail has been set at $10,000.

So far DeLay's entire defense seems to be that Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle is on a partisan witch hunt, that he's nothing but a Democrat looking to hurt the Republican party.

Here's my question: By issuing this arrest warrant and requiring DeLay to be booked, fingerprinted, and mug shot, instead of letting him come in by himself and go through whatever "big wig" machinations are usually extended to officials to avoid such things, is Ronnie Earle playing into DeLay's hands? Does this support his contention that this is an overboard, unjustified attack?

If Ronnie Earle was smart, wouldn't backing off and killing DeLay with kindness be the way to go? That would a) defuse DeLay's defense and make Earle's case look stronger by positioning it as something he didn't want to do but had no choice because of the seriousness and magnitude of the very real crime committed.

I really think this line says it all..

Both the court and DeLay's lawyers portray this as merely a formality.

this don't sound any more or less nuts than similar arrest warrants issued for a buncha texas state congresspeople who fled the state to a avoid a vote on gerryman...um i mean redistricting that pretty much ensured texas would be redder than everyone other than the late hl hunt (in his opinion).

if i was earle and i really wanted to make delay look bad (worse? hmmmm maybe this is carrying coals to the eskimoes?), i'd hire duane 'dawg' chapman to hunt him down and bring him in.

(if nothin else it would warm my heart to see the dawg gettin all weepy--as he has been more n more wont to do following a takedown--til he talked himself into bonding delay out immediately after his surrender.)

"there's fear and darkness all around you
the crim-i-nals are on the run
no use in hiding in the dark
i'll hunt you down 'cause i'm the dawg

i'm the dawg
the big bad dawg
the bounty hunter"

He (Earle) appears to be on a personal vendetta using the flimsiest of premises, the motivation for which may eventually be known. Although the probability is very high that there is no "there" there (criminally speaking), I'd probably watch the show where dawg takes him down.

Ronnie Earle does not seem to be able to control his petulance as demonsstarted by his temper tantrum with one of the Grand Juries.  Based upon what is being 'leaked' from his office, he is ripe for a wrongful prosecution when this gets tossed.
