The random thoughts of a genius...er...gene nash.
kinda, sorta

George Takei, known around the world as Star Trek's Mr. Sulu, has come out of the closet.

He's always seemed a bit prissy to me -- especially when talking about William Shatner -- but gay?

He told The Associated Press that playing the role of the psychiatrist in Equus inspired his going public. He attributes it to the nature of the character, but I don't know...

I remember back in college, when a couple of my fellow students were paired in a scene from Equus. The psychiatrist was a Shadoe Stevens look-alike, and the patient could have been Orlando Bloom's dopey brother. They reached the point of a simulated horse ride, patient in front, psych behind, and as they rocked up and down together, a weird look transfigured their faces... it was one of the gayest things I have ever seen. It looked more like a bathhouse encounter than a horse ride.

Obviously it overcame poor Mr. Sulu causing him to blurt his secret to the world.

And all these years people thought it was Kirk and Spock.

As a side note: Lest my blog start sounding like the Act-Up P.R. machine circa 1988, this will be my last "X is Gay!" article for a long time. With Harry Potter, The Pillsbury Doughboy, and now Mr. Sulu I am over my quota. Now I have to balance it out with something uber-manly like several sports articles or a nice strip club exposé.

Well, Star Trek had a Black Captain, a Klingon Captain, a Woman Captain.  I bet Roddenberry knew so he made sure they had a Gay Captain too!

The only one I really questioned was a French Captain!  Now that stretches the imagination.

He did have an English accent to make it more palatable.

A spoon full of sugar...
