Well, I'd better memorialize this while I still can. My new personal all-time best ranking here on JU. Number 7. WooHoo. My previous best was around number 18. One of my goals last year was to get into the top ten. I had this whole grand plan. Like most of my grand plans, it flopped miserably. Nonetheless, I made it. It might have taken till the next year, but I made it! [ Update: Just so there's no confusion, the picture is from mid-January, not the day I posted the articl...
I've lived in fear of this day. It was bound to happen. Everyone gets cut down eventually. But I'm still so young! I've been tagged. By name yet. According to Blogger Law, I must now answer the following questions. (Let me preface this by saying, if I have any real problem with these type things it's that they so often ask for "favorites." As I elucidated in an article a while back, I don't really have favorites. I may have several things within a category I give preference too, but i...
I first thought of this round about December. It got shelved when I got hospitalized. Since I think of it every once in a while, I've decided to trot it out and try it anyway. Just as an exercise, I'm going to try writing an article for each category in the JU forums. I say "try" because there are a couple that I have doubts about. For instance, "OS Customization." What do I know about OS customization? Another one, "Game Developers." Pffft. I haven't developed a game in nearly 20 years,...
(tap, tap) Is this thing on? Sorry, folks. The lights seem to have blown out for a while there. I'm kinda blinded by them coming back on. Is anyone still out there? Hello? (tap, tap)
So much for my plan for "extensive blogging," eh? Hello, my name is Gene and I'm a lousy blogger. No, no, it's true I tell you! (Okay no one was actually protesting the point, but I made you look!) I'm a lousy blogger because I blog too infrequently. From my perspective, the best blogs tend to be those fairly frequently updated. My average of 2 blogs per week doesn't fit my bill, especially when I know how many more ideas I have that never make it to the web. It's not just unwritte...
"If you fall of a horse, get right back on it!" -- folk wisdom Has it really been 30 days since my last article? It hasn't done me any good. I haven't written any of the other pieces I intended or needed to. After I haven't done something for a while, I have a hard time getting started again. Okay, I have a hard time starting anything, period. When I start something I don't like to stop. I'm best at things I can do straight through. Not only did I fall and couldn't get up, I app...
While trying to research an article, I happened upon an archive of JoeUser back when it was solely Brad's blog. Back around October of 2002 the issues included home movies on a PC, the future of Saddam Hussein and militant Islam, information gods v. mere mortals, and which trees to plant for privacy. I doubt taking this look back at where JoeUser came from will give any indication of where it is going, but it sure is interesting.
Sometimes I'll know something is there, but just not be able to see it. It drives me crazy that my subconscious is onto something but won't share. My sub-c must be female -- it drops hints then pouts because I don't get it. "Well if you can't see it, I'm certainly not going to tell you," it recriminates, then turns its very cold shoulder. For more than a year now I've been looking at kingbee's URL, al-fahryd-i-nhumon.joeuser.com , trying to figure out what it means, knowing ther...

Okay, class, what is wrong with this logic: manhole: Sir Peter = Gene Nash B.S.: manhole is wrong about Sir Peter B.S.: manhole is right about Gene Nash
In a recent article, Gideon MacLeish lamented not being able to hold onto ideas till he could get to the library computer to blog them. I recommended using legal pads in the interim. I've noticed most people seem to blog by typing into the form and pressing send. That's a dangerous practice; you're libel to run into technical problems that can make your article go bye-bye. I used to write all my articles in a WYSIWYG HTML processor, then cut-and-paste as "preformatted HTML." Lately...
Mediaah! was an India based blog dedicated to casting a critical eye toward their mainstream media outlets (MSM). Unfortunately, when you look into the abyss the abyss also looks into you, and the abysmal Indian MSM didn't like what it saw. One of India's largest media conglomerates, The Times of India, sicked their legal team on Mediaah! 's owner, Pradyumnan Maheshwari, demanding he delete 19 postings they considered "defamatory." Instead he has decided to close the blog. "I wou...
A bit of blog errata... My watchlist is buggy. I'm not getting email notifications when people leave comments on my blogs. Certain other threads aren't triggering notifications, either. So, I may or may not have seen your comments. Like I wasn't bad enough at keeping up with them already, right? I was working on that, but this has complicated matters. Great timing, huh? So, if someone leaves a new comment on an article off the main page I probably won't know it. And now they've degra...
It has become somewhat traditional here at JU to write a specialarticle commemorating our 100th article. This is mine. Reaching my 100th blog has me thinking about other 100ths. Some100ths we celebrate (number of blogs, birthdays -- maybe), some we'llprobably never reach (100th Christmas, 100th trips to the other sideof the world, birthdays -- again), and most go by without even anotice (100th Big Mac eaten, 100th sunset stopped and watched, 100thtime you kissed someone special) unless you'r...
